Moscow has a population of about 11.5 million, to which another 3 million commuters are added every working day, and before the two new districts were about 900 km², now it is about 2500. Moscow has a continental climate. At the same altitude the winter usually lasts a little longer than in Central Europe, and in some years the temperature drops below the solidification point of masut, which is widely used for heating purposes in Moscow. Summers are relatively short and hot. Around Moscow, many swamps have been drained in the course of urbanization, which in some hot summers leads to peat smouldering fires and the city suffers from the resulting clouds of smoke.
