Russia

Russia is the largest country in the world in terms of area. It extends over Europe and Asia (Siberia). Bordering countries are Norway and Finland to the northwest, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine to the west, Georgia and Azerbaijan to the southwest, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia to the south, and North Korea to the southeast. Lithuania and Poland border on the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

With 17.075 million square kilometres, Russia is by far the largest country in the world in terms of area. It covers eleven percent of the world's land area, which is roughly equivalent to the combined area of Australia and Europe. All climate zones are represented except the tropics.

From west to east, Russia extends over a total length of 9000 kilometres, from 19° east to 169° west over two continents. Europe accounts for 23 percent of the land area, Asia for 77 percent. From south to north, it stretches up to 4000 kilometres, from 41° to 81° northern latitude.

Russia's territory is home to some of the longest rivers and the oldest and deepest inland lake in the world (Lake Baikal). Comparing the relief structure and river systems of Russia, a grid of width-parallel watersheds or the steppe belt in the south and the meridional river paths is formed.

In Siberia (example Krasnoyarsk) there are about 7 months of real winter (November to May). The control temperature is then -25 °C. However, it can also be down to -45 or approx. -5 °C for a short time. A journey in winter requires correct winter clothing! The change from winter to summer takes place within a few weeks. The snow melts within two weeks and after another two weeks everything is green. Summer is about three months long (June to August). Temperatures around 35 °C in the shade are reached.
